Geographic information system

A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of spatial or geographical data. GIS is a spatial data infrastructure, a concept that has no such restrictive boundaries.
Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) are evolving technologies with enormous potential for contributing to the spatial studies of human activities at global and local environment. Satellite imageries and aerial photographs are some of the widely used data sources for GIS applications, which make it possible to take spatial observations of the Earth’s surface at repetitive intervals, and consequently allow monitoring of the changes. Satellite data provides a synoptic view and covers large areas; and therefore, high resolution satellite data (IKONOS/QUICK BIRD) makes it more cost effective for better spatial planning and decision making.
